On March 4 the program Fantastico of Rede Globo aired a story about an unexplored region of the Pantanal. The story shoes what 40 years of aggression to the environment resulted in the rich region, and the answer that nature has given.

The challenge for the team of Fantastico was to reach the most isolated places where people live stranded. Reporters descended the Paraguay River to enter into a tributary that leads to the Wetlands area. The water is clean, you can see the bottom. There are small portions of forest have not been flooded.

The reporters showed areas considered "cemeteries of trees" that were once inhabited by herds of cattle, and now only see a flooded area. They also show how is the situation of local residents, many want to leave their homes.

Without the natural protection, the soil is being degraded. The rain carried thousands of tons of sand and filled the riverbed. The strength of the current arms opened, diverting more than half of the water to the fields. An area of 11,000 square kilometers, ten times larger than the city of Rio de Janeiro was flooded.

Roberto Gonçalves, director of the Institute of the Environment of Mato Grosso do Sul was interviewed and commented on this great flood inundated area cited in the report and told that this is the biggest environmental problem in the Pantanal and generates economic losses in livestock and fisheries in the region.

The article draws the attention of Brazilians to an area rich in biodiversity that is being devastated, but still can have salvation.
